Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre has had surgery on his right hamstring and is expected to be out for roughly two to three months, according to a BCCI source quoted by PTI.

The operation was carried out on Thursday at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. The source said it went well, and that Mhatre was walking slowly with crutches by Friday morning.

The details

Mhatre suffered a Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring while running between the wickets on day one of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener against Chandigarh on 11 October. He is the India U-19 World Cup-winning skipper and Mumbai’s vice-captain.

His absence has forced Mumbai to rework its opening pair. Mhatre opened with Yashasvi Jaiswal against Chandigarh. In the away match against Himachal Pradesh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Divyaansh Saxena opened after Jaiswal left for national duties.

A second hamstring setback this year

This is not Mhatre’s first hamstring problem of the year. He injured his left hamstring while playing for Chennai Super Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 18 April, which ruled him out of the rest of IPL 2026.

He then spent three months at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for treatment and rehabilitation before returning to play.

India’s upcoming fixtures

Separately, India are in the New Zealand vs India T20I Series 2026 and have won their last two T20Is, on 22 October and 24 October, each by 4 wickets.

The next three matches in the series are the third T20I on Tuesday, 27 October, the fourth on Friday, 30 October and the fifth on Sunday, 1 November. All start at 12:30 PM IST.
