Suryakumar Yadav is an India batter who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm offbreaks. He was born on 14 September 1990 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He has played for India, Mumbai and, in the IPL, Mumbai Indians.
He is best known as a T20I batter: he was named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for 2022 and again for 2023, and he was reappointed India’s T20I captain in July 2024.
Early life and domestic career
Suryakumar began in club cricket in Mumbai, mainly with Parsi Gymkhana, before he was picked for the Mumbai state side. He made his List A debut for Mumbai against Gujarat in February 2010. His T20 debut followed the next month against Hyderabad, and his first-class debut came against Delhi in December 2010.
His Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in 2010 brought 73 runs, and the following season included a double-century against Orissa in his third match. Later he lost the Mumbai captaincy across formats after reports of infighting and indiscipline, a low point before his turnaround in 2016.
International career
Suryakumar made his T20I debut against England on 14 March 2021 and was capped as number 85 in the format. His ODI debut came on 18 July 2021 in a match against Sri Lanka at Colombo, and his last ODI was against Australia on 19 November 2023. He played his only Test to date against Australia at Nagpur on 9 February 2023.
He scored his first T20I century, 117 off 55 balls, against England at Trent Bridge in July 2022. That year he made 1164 runs in 31 T20I innings at a strike rate of 187.43, which earned him the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award. He was the No. 1 ranked T20I batter from October 2022 to June 2024.
He was first named India captain in November 2023 and was reappointed T20I captain in July 2024 after Rohit Sharma retired from the format. Under him India won the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, and did not lose a T20I series or tournament. He became the fourth Indian captain to win a major ICC event, after Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

Suryakumar played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2017 and has been with Mumbai Indians since 2018. He won two IPL titles with Mumbai, in 2019 and 2020.
