Inglis century and 185-run stand put Australia ahead in Cape Town
Josh Inglis made a century and put on 185 for the fifth wicket with Alex Carey as Australia were bowled out for 429 on day three of the 3rd Test against South Africa in Cape Town, a first-innings lead of 100 runs over the hosts’ 329.
South Africa closed the day on 140/4, ahead by 40 runs with six wickets in hand. Simon Harmer’s two early wickets had brought them back into the contest.
The Inglis-Carey stand
The partnership between Inglis and Carey gave Australia the 100-run lead before tea and overturned the position left by South Africa’s first innings.
Mitchell Starc had set up the match with 6-72 on the opening day, his best Test figures against South Africa.
South Africa’s reply
Aiden Markram and David Bedingham fell early in the second innings, leaving South Africa 31/2, and Harmer’s two early wickets on day three kept the hosts in the match.
Marques Ackerman’s fifty then steadied the reply, until Starc ended his innings with a short delivery. South Africa finished the day with a lead of 40 runs and will look to build on it when play resumes on day four.
State of the series
The three-match series is level at 1-1, so this Test decides it. Australia won the Test on 9 October by 214 runs, and South Africa replied with an innings-and-31-run win on 18 October.
What’s next
South Africa next face Bangladesh, with a match on Sunday, 15 November at 1:00 PM IST. Australia start a white-ball series against England on Friday, 13 November at 9:00 AM IST.
