Glenn Maxwell, 38, has retired from international cricket after about 14 years, having played 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests for Australia. The ICC reports that he announced his decision on Monday.

His final appearance for Australia was the last match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, against Oman. He will carry on in franchise T20 cricket.

The career

Maxwell was part of Australian squads that won two 50-over World Cups and the 2021 T20 World Cup. In ODIs he scored 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7, and in T20Is he made 2,897 runs at 154.4.

ABC reports that he had already retired from one-day cricket in 2025, so the latest announcement means he will no longer play T20 internationals for Australia either.

Reaction and what he said

Speaking on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he was grateful to have played for his country. He also told ANI, citing Cricinfo, that he had held a small hope of a farewell game at the MCG but accepted Australia’s move towards younger players.

NZ Herald reports that he was again left out of the squad named on Monday for the England series, with younger players preferred. Australia’s next match is the first ODI against England on Friday, 13 November at 9:00 AM IST, followed by the second ODI on Sunday, 15 November and the third on Wednesday, 18 November, both also at 9:00 AM IST.

Franchise cricket continues

Maxwell will keep playing franchise T20 cricket, including in the upcoming Big Bash League, ABC reports.
