Hardik Pandya is an India batting allrounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast-medium. He was born on 11 October 1993 in Choryasi, Gujarat. He plays domestic cricket for Baroda. In the IPL he spent a long stint with Mumbai Indians before Gujarat Titans signed him ahead of IPL 2022.

He is regarded as one of the best white-ball allrounders in the world. At the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup he became the first Indian allrounder to be ranked number 1 in the T20I rankings.

Early life and domestic career

Pandya’s family moved from Surat to Vadodara when he was five, so that he and his brother could get better cricket training. He was enrolled in Kiran More’s cricket academy there. He has played for Baroda since 2013.

His domestic T20 breakthrough came at the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament in January 2016. He was Baroda’s leading run-getter and took 10 wickets, and Baroda reached the final.

International career

Pandya made his T20I debut against Australia at Adelaide in January 2016. His ODI debut followed against New Zealand at Dharamsala on 16 October 2016, when he became the fourth Indian to be named player of the match on ODI debut.

His Test debut came against Sri Lanka at Galle, from 26 to 29 July 2017. In his maiden Test hundred at Pallekele against Sri Lanka, he became the first Indian batsman to score a Test century just before lunch. His last Test to date was England v India at Southampton, from 30 August to 2 September 2018.

At the 2016 World T20 he bowled the last over against Bangladesh, defending two runs off three balls as India won by one run. He was named captain for the T20I matches against Ireland in June 2022 and has captained India in white-ball cricket.

He was vice-captain of India’s squad at the 2024 T20 World Cup and took 11 wickets in the tournament. In the final he took 3 wickets and bowled the last over, dismissing David Miller off the first ball. He is also the first fast-bowling allrounder to complete 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is.

IPL

Pandya first drew notice with an unbeaten 31-ball 61 for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2015. That began a long association with the franchise, during which he won four trophies.

Mumbai Indians released him before IPL 2022 and Gujarat Titans signed him. He was appointed captain and led the side to the IPL title in his first season in charge.

Playing style

Pandya is a middle-order batter and a seam-bowling allrounder. His calling cards are brisk seam bowling and powerful ball-striking, and he can hit sixes from the first ball he faces.
