Early life and domestic career
Gill made his List A debut for Punjab against Vidarbha in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 25 February 2017. His first-class debut for Punjab followed against Bengal in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy on 17 November 2017.

His Test debut came on 26 December 2020 in the 2020 Border–Gavaskar Trophy, where he was part of India’s comeback win in the second match. He made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka on 3 January 2023.
His 208 in an ODI came at the age of 23, making him the youngest to reach a double century in the format. On 30 September 2026, he hit an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls against West Indies in Guwahati, the fastest double century in ODI history, as India chased down a 405-run total.
In May 2025, after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, Gill was appointed India’s Test captain for the five-match series against England. He is also named as India’s ODI captain. He has won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award four times, and is the first male player to do so.
IPL
Kolkata Knight Riders picked Gill for INR 1.8 crore at the 2018 IPL auction, while he was in New Zealand for the Under-19 World Cup. He played for them from 2018 to 2021, topping their run charts in 2020 and again in their 2021 IPL final run. They did not retain him after the 2021 season.
At Gujarat Titans he won the orange cap in IPL 2023 with 890 runs. In the 2023 final he was Player of the Match for his 129 off 60 balls against Chennai. He became Gujarat Titans captain in 2024, his first captaincy stint in the IPL.
