Harry Brook hit the fastest double century in ODI history, but England still lost. Sri Lanka chased down 430 to win by two wickets with one ball to spare in the Pakistan ODI tri-series match in Rawalpindi.

Brook reached 200 in 114 balls, finishing with 202 as England totalled 429 for four. Sri Lanka replied with 430 for eight in 49.5 overs, with Pavan Rathnayake top-scoring on 130.

The details

Brook’s 114-ball double hundred beat the previous fastest, 117 balls, set by Shubman Gill for India against the West Indies in Guwahati last month. His innings had 21 fours and 10 sixes, and he was out off the final ball of England’s innings.

He is the first English batter to score a double century in men’s ODIs. His 202 went past Ben Stokes’s earlier England best of 182. It is also the highest individual ODI score made in Pakistan, overtaking Gary Kirsten’s 188 not out.

Joe Root added 69 off 66 balls and became the first England batter to reach 8,000 ODI runs, in his 197th ODI.

Sri Lanka’s chase is the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, behind South Africa’s 435 against Australia in 2006.

Where England stand

England have now lost both of their opening matches in the tri-series. Pakistan beat them by 87 runs on 20 October. England sit at the bottom of the standings and need to win their remaining games to reach the final in Lahore.
