Update: this story was written while the match was in play. Result: India won by 5 wickets – 2nd inns reduced to 32 overs – DLS Target 143. Full scorecard: New Zealand vs India.

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first against New Zealand in the first of five ODIs at Eden Park, Auckland, on Wednesday, 4 November. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both in India’s XI.

Rain delayed the toss. Gill said the overcast conditions, and the possibility of reductions, made it good to have a target on the board. At the time of the latest update, New Zealand were 171/9 after 37.2 overs, with India yet to bat.

India’s XI

Alongside Gill, Rohit and Kohli, India picked Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh. Gill named Kamboj, Nabi, Brar and Arshdeep as the four pacers.

India’s ODI record in New Zealand

India have not won an ODI in New Zealand since February 2019. They have lost two series there since, 3-0 and 1-0, the latter with two matches washed out.

New Zealand’s side

Mitchell Santner leads New Zealand, whose side includes Tim Seifert, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy and Blair Tickner.

Devon Conway misses the opener after a collision with Matt Henry in training, while Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra are out for the whole series.

Next up in the series

Four matches remain in the New Zealand vs India ODI Series 2026, which runs until 15 November. The second ODI is in Wellington on Saturday, 7 November at 7:30 AM IST.
