Hardik Pandya is set to move from Mumbai Indians to Punjab Kings in exchange for pacer Arshdeep Singh, with both franchises agreeing the trade ahead of the IPL auction later this month. An IPL source confirmed that the deal has been completed, though it still needs ratification from the BCCI before it is official.

The move ends Hardik Pandya’s second stint at Mumbai Indians, whom he rejoined in the 2024 season as captain, replacing long-serving skipper Rohit Sharma.

Why the trade happened

The IPL source said the decision was taken by the Punjab Kings captain and coach. It was not an easy call for the owners, the source added, given how well Arshdeep Singh has performed for the franchise.

Hardik Pandya will join Punjab Kings strictly as a player, as Shreyas Iyer is expected to continue as captain. The source said Hardik Pandya is happy to play under him.

Hardik Pandya at Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for the play-offs twice in the three seasons since Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy. ANI, citing Cricinfo, reported that he recorded 15 wins and 24 defeats in 39 matches as captain since 2024, and that the team finished ninth in IPL 2026.

Hardik Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the previous IPL season because of multiple injury setbacks, according to the PTI report.

Arshdeep Singh’s switch

Arshdeep Singh has been with Punjab Kings since his IPL debut in 2019. ANI, citing Cricinfo, reported that he has taken 111 wickets in 96 matches at an economy rate of 9.18, and that this will be the first time he represents another IPL franchise.

What’s next

The BCCI has extended the player retention deadline to 17 November, and the mini-auction is scheduled for Goa on 16 December.
