Shubman Gill to lead India in first three NZ ODIs, Iyer last two
Shubman Gill will captain India in the first three ODIs against New Zealand, and Shreyas Iyer will lead the side in the last two. The five-match series starts on Wednesday, 4 November at 7:30 AM IST, with the first ODI in Auckland.
India picked a split squad for the series because some players will prepare with the red ball for the Wellington Test on 19 November, Outlook India reports.
Who leads when
ICC reports that Gill captains in the first three ODIs, in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton. Iyer then takes charge for the fourth and fifth, both in Mount Maunganui.
Iyer made 50 off 23 balls in India’s final T20I against New Zealand on 1 November, a game India lost by 7 wickets.
New Zealand’s side
Mitchell Santner continues to lead New Zealand. Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert have earned recalls for the series, Wisden reports. Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman were named in the squad earlier but were ruled out through injury.
Coming off the T20Is
India arrive after a 3-2 win in the T20I series. They won the first three matches, then lost the last two: by 87 runs on 30 October, and by 7 wickets on 1 November.
Their previous ODI series, at home against West Indies, ended 2-1 in their favour. Wisden notes India will hope to win a bilateral ODI series in New Zealand for the third time.
What’s next
After the opener, the second ODI is on Saturday, 7 November in Wellington and the third on Tuesday, 10 November in Hamilton, both at 7:30 AM IST. The fourth and fifth follow on 13 and 15 November, with the series running to 15 November.
